Club championship rules

The Leuven Monthly tournaments of one calendar year together form the club championship.
These rules have applied since 2022.

Seasons

The year has three seasons: Winter, Spring and Autumn. Each season consists of three Leuven Monthly tournaments. This year’s dates are on the home page.

In every tournament of a season you earn one championship point for:

  • each match you win;
  • each bye;
  • taking part in the tournament.

With five matches per tournament, that is at most 18 points per season.

The player with the most points wins the season and qualifies for the play-off, whatever the results in the other two seasons.

Play-off

Four players qualify for the play-off in December: the season winners (one, two or three different players), completed with the highest-ranked other players over the three seasons together.

The semi-finals follow the overall ranking after the three seasons: first against fourth, second against third. A final and a match for third place decide the top three. All play-off matches are played to 9 points.

The winner of the final is the club champion of the year.

Players who did not qualify play a regular Leuven Monthly tournament on the same day.

Ties

A tie at the end of a season is broken by, in this order: the mutual result in that season, the number of victories in that season, the number of participations in that season, an additional one-point match.

A tie for a place in the play-off is broken in the same way, counted over the whole year.

Earlier years

These rules were first announced in Leuven Monthly 2022. The formats of 2011–2020 are described on the archived Club Championship page.
